Note: RGB/HEX is an approximation (sRGB). Real camera/lighting white balance depends on sensor profiles, tint (green/magenta), and environment.

Typical range: 1000K (very warm) to 40000K (very cool).

What is color temperature?

Color temperature is a way to describe the “warmth” or “coolness” of a light source, measured in Kelvin (K). Lower values look warmer (more orange/yellow), while higher values look cooler (more blue).

This calculator helps you translate a Kelvin value into an approximate sRGB color so you can preview and communicate a white point in design and media workflows.

How it works

  • Enter a Kelvin value or use the slider/presets.
  • The tool estimates an sRGB white point using a common approximation model.
  • Copy RGB/HEX and mired values for your workflow.

Best practices

  • Use mired values when comparing or shifting white balance (they’re linear in “perceived” shifts).
  • Remember Kelvin doesn’t capture tint (green/magenta) — use separate tint controls in photo/video tools.
  • Treat the RGB/HEX output as a preview, not a physical measurement of your light source.

Frequently asked questions

What is mired?

Mired is “micro reciprocal degrees” and is defined as 1,000,000 ÷ Kelvin. Many photo/video workflows use mired because equal steps in mired correspond better to equal white-balance shifts.

Why is the RGB/HEX only approximate?

Kelvin describes an ideal black-body radiator. Real lights (LEDs, fluorescents) can deviate significantly, and camera profiles and tint influence the final appearance.

What range is supported?

This tool is designed for 1000K–40000K. Outside that range, the approximation becomes less reliable.
