What is Sales Tax?

Sales tax is a tax charged at the point of sale on goods and (in some places) services. In the US, sales tax is set by state and often by local jurisdictions, so rates vary (e.g. 0% in some states, 4%–10% or more elsewhere). When pricing or reviewing receipts you often need to either add sales tax to a pre-tax amount to get the total, or remove sales tax from a total to get the pre-tax amount and the tax portion.

The Tooladex Sales Tax Calculator does both. Enter your amount and tax rate (use presets for common US rates or type a custom rate like 6.25%), and get the tax amount and pre-tax or total instantly.

How it Works

  • Add Sales Tax (Pre-tax → Total): Enter the pre-tax amount and tax rate. See the sales tax amount and total (pre-tax + tax).
  • Remove Sales Tax (Total → Pre-tax): Enter the total (including tax) and tax rate. See the sales tax amount and pre-tax amount.

Use preset rates (0%–10%) or enter any custom rate (e.g. 6.25%, 8.25%). Results update as you type. All calculations run in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Sales Tax Formulas

Add Sales Tax:

  • Sales Tax Amount = Pre-tax × (Rate ÷ 100)
  • Total = Pre-tax + Sales Tax Amount

Remove Sales Tax:

  • Pre-tax Amount = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
  • Sales Tax Amount = Total − Pre-tax Amount

Example (add): $100 pre-tax at 8% → Tax $8, Total $108. Example (remove): $108 total at 8% → Pre-tax $100, Tax $8.

Common Use Cases

  • Pricing — Add sales tax to list prices to show customer total.
  • Receipts — Remove sales tax from a total to get pre-tax and tax for expense or accounting.
  • Quotes — Show pre-tax and total for different state/local rates.
  • E-commerce — Estimate total at checkout for different jurisdictions.
  • Budgeting — Work out true cost including sales tax.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sales tax the same as VAT or GST?

Conceptually similar (tax on purchase), but different. Sales tax (e.g. US) is usually charged only at the final sale to the consumer. VAT (UK, EU) and GST (e.g. Australia, Canada, India) are value-added taxes charged at each stage; businesses often reclaim them. The add/remove math is the same — use this calculator with your local rate.

Which US states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no state sales tax. Some have local taxes. Use 0% in the calculator for no-tax amounts, or your local rate if applicable.

Why doesn't subtracting the tax rate give the pre-tax amount?

Adding 8% then subtracting 8% does not reverse: $100 + 8% = $108, but $108 − 8% = $99.36. The total includes tax, so you must divide by (1 + rate): Pre-tax = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100). The calculator does this for you when you choose "Remove Sales Tax".
