How to Split a Bill: Fair Splitting for Restaurants and Group Expenses

Splitting a bill should be simple — divide the total by the number of people. But add a tip percentage, different group sizes, and the pressure of doing mental math at a noisy restaurant table, and it gets messy fast. A split bill calculator handles the arithmetic so everyone pays the right amount without awkward guesswork.

Here’s how bill splitting works, and how to use the Tooladex Split Bill Calculator.

The Formula

Splitting a bill with tip uses three steps:

Tip = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)

Total = Bill + Tip

Per person = Total ÷ Number of people

Example: A $120 dinner bill with a 20% tip, split between 4 people:

  • Tip: $120 × 0.20 = $24
  • Total: $120 + $24 = $144
  • Per person: $144 ÷ 4 = $36 each

Simple enough on paper, but harder with real-world numbers like a $87.43 bill split 3 ways with an 18% tip.

When to Use a Split Bill Calculator

  • Restaurants — Split the check evenly after a group meal, with tip included.
  • Delivery and takeout — Add tip and divide the total between roommates or friends.
  • Bars and cafes — Quick split on a shared tab at the end of the night.
  • Travel — Divide shared expenses like meals, taxis, or hotel rooms in any currency.
  • Shared subscriptions — Split a streaming service or other recurring cost between housemates.
  • Group gifts — Divide the total cost of a gift among contributors.

Common Tip Percentages

Tipping norms vary by country and context, but in the US these are standard for restaurant service:

  • 0% — No tip (takeout, self-service, or countries where tipping isn’t customary).
  • 15% — Minimum for acceptable table service.
  • 18% — Standard for good service. Many restaurants use this as the default suggested tip.
  • 20% — Good to excellent service. The most common tip percentage in the US.
  • 22–25% — Excellent or exceptional service, large parties, or when you want to be generous.

The calculator includes preset buttons for these common percentages, plus a custom field for any value.

Tips for Fair Splitting

  • Agree on the method before ordering. If someone orders significantly more or less, decide upfront whether to split evenly or pay individually.
  • Include tax in the bill amount. Enter the post-tax subtotal so the tip is calculated on the correct amount.
  • Round up, not down. When the per-person amount has cents, rounding up by a few cents avoids underpaying and keeps things simple.
  • Use 1 person for no split. If you just want to see the total with tip (no splitting), set the number of people to 1.
