What is Cost Per Unit?

Cost per unit is the price you pay for one unit of something when you buy (or produce) in bulk. You take the total cost and divide it by the number of units (items, kg, liters, etc.) to get the price per single unit. It helps you compare deals, set prices, or budget.

Example: A box of 24 items costs $48. Cost per unit = $48 ÷ 24 = $2 per item. This tool does that calculation for you and lets you label the unit (item, kg, etc.) for clarity.

How it Works

  • Enter total cost — The full amount paid or budgeted (e.g. $99.00).
  • Enter quantity — The number of units (e.g. 25 items, 2.5 kg). Decimals are supported.
  • Unit label (optional) — Name the unit (e.g. "item", "kg", "box") so the result says "per item", "per kg", etc. Leave blank for "per unit".
  • See result — Cost per unit updates as you type. All calculations run in your browser.

Formula

Cost per unit = Total cost ÷ Quantity

Example: $100 total for 20 items → $100 ÷ 20 = $5 per item. For 2.5 kg at $15 → $15 ÷ 2.5 = $6 per kg.

Use Cases

  • Retail & shopping — Compare "per unit" price when one product is sold in packs (e.g. 6-pack vs single).
  • Food & cooking — Cost per kg, per liter, or per serving from a total grocery or recipe cost.
  • Business & inventory — Unit cost from invoice total and quantity received.
  • Budgeting — Break down a bulk purchase into per-item or per-use cost.
  • Pricing — Work out what to charge per unit given total cost and desired margin (use with a margin calculator).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can quantity be a decimal?

Yes. Use decimals when the unit is continuous (e.g. 2.5 kg, 1.5 liters). Cost per unit will be calculated from total cost ÷ that quantity (e.g. $15 ÷ 2.5 kg = $6 per kg).

What if total cost includes tax or shipping?

Enter the total you actually pay (including tax, shipping, etc.) if you want "true" cost per unit. If you only want product cost per unit, enter the product subtotal and leave tax/shipping out.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. All calculations happen in your browser. Your numbers never leave your device.
