What is a Tip Calculator?
A tip calculator works out how much to leave as a tip and the total amount to pay (bill + tip). You enter the bill amount and the tip percentage (e.g. 15%, 18%, 20%). Optionally, you can split the total between multiple people to see how much each person pays.
Common tip percentages in the US are 15% (basic service), 18% (good service), and 20% or more (excellent service). The calculator supports presets and any custom percentage, and updates instantly as you type.
How it Works
- Enter bill amount — The total before tip (e.g. $50.00).
- Choose tip % — Use presets (15%, 18%, 20%, 22%, 25%) or type a custom percentage. Leave 0 for no tip.
- Split (optional) — Enter number of people to split the bill. Leave as 1 if paying together.
- See results — Tip amount, total (bill + tip), and per-person amount when splitting.
Results update automatically. All calculations run in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
Tip Formula
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip % ÷ 100)
Total = Bill + Tip Amount
Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People
Example: $60 bill, 20% tip → Tip = $12, Total = $72. Split 3 ways → $24 per person.
Common Use Cases

- Split the bill — See how much each person owes when sharing the check.
- Delivery & takeout — Calculate tip on food orders.
- Bars & cafes — Quick tip on drinks or small bills.
- Travel — Tip for taxis, hotels, tours in any currency.

Most people tip on the pre-tax bill total. If a receipt shows subtotal vs total with tax, use the subtotal (or pre-tax amount) as the bill in the calculator. You can also use the final total if that's your preference — the calculator works either way.
Enter the full bill amount, your tip percentage, and the number of people. The calculator shows the total (bill + tip) and divides it equally so each person pays the same amount.
