What is a Digital Signature?

A digital signature is a visual representation of your handwritten signature in a digital format — typically a PNG image. It can be used anywhere a signature is expected but where pen and paper are not available: PDF forms, contracts, invoices, artwork, and more.

Unlike a cryptographic digital signature (used for authentication and non-repudiation), a visual signature generator produces an image that looks like your handwritten signature. It is useful for informal documents, internal forms, and cases where a visual mark is sufficient.

Draw vs Type — Which Should You Use?

Draw Mode

Produces the most authentic result. Use a touchscreen or a graphics tablet for the most natural output. Works with a mouse too, though results vary.

Best for:

  • Personal or informal use
  • Touchscreen devices
  • When uniqueness matters

Type Mode

Renders your name in a cursive or handwriting-style font. Consistent and clean every time. Faster than drawing, especially on a desktop.

Best for:

  • Consistent branding use
  • Fast signature generation
  • When you don't have a touchscreen

Where to Use Your Signature

  • PDF documents: Most PDF editors (Adobe Acrobat, Preview on Mac, PDF Expert) let you insert a PNG image as a signature.
  • Google Docs / Word: Insert the PNG file inline at the signature line.
  • Digital invoices: Add your signature image to invoice templates before sending.
  • Artwork and design: Sign illustrations or design work before sharing.
  • Letters and cover letters: Add a personal touch to formal documents.
  • Email Signature: Use alongside your contact details in an email signature block (see our Email Signature Generator for a complete solution).

Tips for a Better Signature

  • Use a touchscreen or stylus: Drawing with a finger or stylus produces a far more natural result than a mouse.
  • Sign slowly: Drawing too fast creates jagged lines. Slower strokes follow curves more smoothly.
  • Use a medium or thick stroke: Thin strokes can look weak. A medium weight looks more confident on the page.
  • Keep it simple: Overly complex signatures are hard to draw consistently. A clean, flowing signature is more reliable.
  • Use dark ink on documents: Black (#1a1a1a) or dark navy are the most legible and professional choices for signed documents.
  • Save your PNG: Once you have a signature you like, download and keep it for reuse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my drawing sent to a server?

No. Everything happens entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded or stored.

Is this legally binding?

A visual signature image is generally not considered a legally binding electronic signature on its own. For legal documents, use a dedicated e-signature platform such as DocuSign, HelloSign, or Adobe Sign, which provide authentication and audit trails.

What resolution is the downloaded PNG?

The canvas is 800 × 240 pixels. This is sufficient for most digital uses. If you need a higher resolution version, zoom your browser to 200% and redraw — the internal canvas size will scale up accordingly.

Can I get a transparent background?

The download and copy functions add a white background for maximum compatibility. If you need a transparent PNG, download the file and use a free tool like Remove.bg or GIMP to remove the white background.

Which font looks the most like a real signature?

Great Vibes and Dancing Script tend to look the most authentic, with flowing connected strokes. Pacifico and Satisfy have a more casual, rounded feel. Caveat looks like neat handwriting. Try a few and see which suits your style.
