What is a Unit Converter?

A unit converter is a tool that converts measurements from one unit to another within the same category. Whether you need to convert meters to feet, kilograms to pounds, or Celsius to Fahrenheit, a unit converter makes these calculations instant and accurate.

Unit conversions are essential in many fields including science, engineering, cooking, travel, fitness, and everyday life. Different countries and industries use different measurement systems (metric vs imperial), making conversions a common necessity.

Our unit converter supports 10 different categories with over 80 units, handling everything from simple length conversions to complex calculations involving temperature, energy, and digital storage.

How it Works

Our unit converter uses precise conversion factors to accurately transform values between different units:

  • Select Category: Choose the type of measurement (length, weight, temperature, etc.)
  • Choose Units: Select the source unit and target unit from the dropdowns
  • Enter Value: Input the number you want to convert
  • Instant Results: The conversion is calculated automatically in real-time
  • Swap Units: Click the swap button to reverse the conversion direction

For most units, the conversion works by first converting to a base unit (like meters for length or kilograms for weight), then converting to the target unit. Temperature conversions use special formulas since they involve offsets rather than simple multiplication.

  • Travel: Convert between miles and kilometers, Fahrenheit and Celsius, or gallons and liters when traveling internationally.
  • Cooking: Convert recipe measurements between cups, tablespoons, milliliters, and other volume units.
  • Fitness: Convert between pounds and kilograms for weight tracking, or miles and kilometers for running distances.
  • Science & Engineering: Convert between metric and imperial units for calculations and specifications.
  • Real Estate: Convert between square feet, square meters, acres, and hectares for property measurements.
  • Technology: Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes for file sizes and storage capacity.
  • Weather: Convert temperature readings between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin.
  • Automotive: Convert fuel efficiency, tire pressure (PSI to bar), and speed limits.

Conversion Examples

Length: Miles to Kilometers

1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers

Example: A 5-mile run is approximately 8.05 kilometers.

Weight: Pounds to Kilograms

1 pound = 0.453592 kilograms

Example: 150 pounds is approximately 68.04 kilograms.

Temperature: Fahrenheit to Celsius

°C = (°F - 32) × 5/9

Example: 98.6°F (body temperature) is approximately 37°C.

Volume: Gallons to Liters

1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters

Example: A 10-gallon tank holds approximately 37.85 liters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate are the conversions?

Our conversions use standard conversion factors with high precision. Results are displayed with up to 10 significant digits. For scientific or engineering applications requiring extreme precision, always verify with official conversion standards.

What's the difference between KB and KiB?

KB (kilobyte) in our converter uses the binary standard where 1 KB = 1024 bytes. KiB (kibibyte) is the IEC binary prefix that explicitly means 1024 bytes. Some systems use KB to mean 1000 bytes (decimal), which can cause confusion. Our converter uses the binary definition for both to maintain consistency with common computing usage.

Why is temperature conversion different?

Temperature scales don't share a common zero point, so conversion involves both multiplication and addition/subtraction. For example, 0°C equals 32°F, not 0°F. The formula for Celsius to Fahrenheit is: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32. This is why temperature uses special conversion formulas rather than simple multiplication factors.

Are US and Imperial gallons the same?

No, they're different! A US gallon is approximately 3.785 liters, while an Imperial gallon (used in the UK) is approximately 4.546 liters. Our converter includes both, so make sure you select the correct one for your needs.

How do I convert very large or small numbers?

The converter automatically handles very large or very small numbers and will display them in scientific notation when appropriate. For example, converting nanoseconds to years might show a result like 3.17e-17.

What about calories vs food Calories?

In nutrition, "Calories" (with a capital C) actually refers to kilocalories (kcal). When a food label says 100 Calories, it means 100 kilocalories or 100,000 small calories. Our converter includes both "calorie" (small calorie) and "kilocalorie" (food Calorie) for accurate conversions.

Is my data stored or tracked?

No. All conversions happen entirely in your browser. We don't store, log, or transmit any values you enter. Your calculations are completely private.

Can I use this for offline calculations?

Since all calculations are performed in your browser, the converter will work offline once the page is loaded. However, you'll need an internet connection to initially load the page.
